This Christmas is set to be a chilly one; with snow falling and icicles clinging to almost everything, it really is turning into a winter wonderland out there. Fashion gurus are pulling on the chunky knits and wrapping in luxurious fur coats, not to mention sporting the new headgear this winter – the headband.

There’s been a lot of talk about ‘ladylike’ fashion. While oh-so-sophisticated, if you’re not quite at the stage in your life to don full skirts and cleavage, a more youthful look might be up your street. Now when you think of ‘girl power’, you probably think of mid-nineties girl bands and cheesy pop.

Whether made of chiffon, silk, velvet or wool, whether full length or three-quarters, whether dressed down with a knit jumper or up with sequins, there was one very obvious piece on the runways this year that has been sorely missing for many – the maxi skirt.

Fall runways were treated to a display of luxurious fabrics as part of a trans-season trend. From grown-up textures of luscious lace and tactile velvet to faux fur and lashings of leopard print. The "IT" fabric of the season, though is undoubtedly shearling. This must-have sheepskin is given a modern twist for instant new-season appeal.

Fall 2010 is going to be all about dark, sexy and minimalist. Last spring, there was an emergence of neutral colors, but there was still a large undertone in the streets and on the runways of bold prints combined with neutrals. Here are the ten best emerging trends and how to style them.

The ubiquitous and increasingly popular outerwear everyone from Blake Lively to Keira Knightley is wearing, even the designers are clamouring to showcase the best coat for the season. Oversized and thrown over a mini skirt at Prada; cropped and paired with a frill skirt and thigh high boots at Burberry – these latest darlings are supple, lightweight and soft as cashmere. Shear delight!

Any spring-summer 2010 fashion shows were carried out under the motto "militarism and craziness" and customized denim fashion revealed these tendencies as well. This season’s Spring/Summer ’10 Sports Luxe style is a trend that I, personally am happy to see. Thanks to Chloe, Alexander Wang and Phillip Lim, I can pull out my hooded dress and hi-tops once again. By putting sportswear on their catwalks they have allowed us to take our harem pants and crop tops out of our gym bag and into the fashion mainstream. Not that we ever actually managed to make it to the gym – let’s be honest, we signed up with every intention of going, used it as an excuse to go shopping for ‘much needed’ sports clothes, and then, just, never, actually went. Nevertheless comfort is highly important, especially when living in fast paced London, and I am loving the mix between athletic comfort and chic style.
