Juicy Fruit – Fashion’s Taste for Orange

From delicate tangerines, to neon and deep terracotta – this season fashion is warming up. Now you don’t have to wait for the summer holidays to don this zesty shade, whatever the weather, orange will bring your outfit to life.

It oozes confidence and fun, so be it a small accessory or head-to-toe, you can give yourself a big fat pat on your fashionable back. It comes down to the trends for statement brights, color blocking and the 70s. What is surprising, however, is the misconception orange is limited to darker skin tones – WRONG, it’s all about picking out the right shade for you – so you can put a spring in your step.

Orange On The Runways

Orange is one of those colors that kept popping up in the SS11 runway shows. Some designers color-blocked it with other brights, some toned it down to more rusty shades and then there were those who just went for it – pure and unadulterated orange with a capital O. Jil Sander has to be one of the most iconic collections of the season. Combining bold stripes, color blocking and scale, this is the pinnacle of in-your-face orange style.

Orange on the runways

Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen was a touch softer, using a warmer marmalade hue in her prints and sculptural butterfly designs. Tongue-in-cheek as always, Christopher Kane’s traffic-stopping collection, had a vintage aesthetic in a very modern neon color palette, including fluoro coral. Then there was Prada which had bright carrot in everything from separates and dresses to shoes and even sunglasses. While Marc Jacobs’ nod to the seventies included retro geometric prints in rust, purples, copper, magenta and of course orange.

How To Wear

So, how you can wear this juicy color? The secret is in the combinations. Combine it with black, white or any other bright color – and you have a striking, bold look: here you need to think streamlined and strong silhouettes. Next to pastels or florals, orange is instantly summery and feminine: choose lightweight fabrics such as silks and chiffon with girly details. Brown, cream with orange is an elegant and timeless combination: with the huge trend for 70s don orange bottoms, pile on chunky accessories and rock those platforms. While the weather’s still dreary, it’s time to ditch greige and get fruity with orange.
